OUR STORY

Story of Torbay Mods Scooter Club
From Co-founder Paul Savin
WE CALL OURSELVES THE TORBAY MODS! (HARKING BACK TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF THE 60s) WE RIDE OUR SCOOTERS AROUND TORBAY AND BEYOND RELIVING OUR MISSPENT YOUTH!
 ———————————————————————————————————————————————
The club was formed in 2007 by 3 ex Mods from the 60’s Paul, Mike and Stan (sadly Stan passed away after 4 years, he was a ‘special guy’), all three founders where the same age and the same hair colour!
The club has proved very popular over the years, growing from 3 to currently 60+ members from all over South Devon including Torbay, Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Dawlish, Exeter and even Plymouth! Unusually we also have people wanting to join the club outside of Devon and these people (not all have scooters!) join our club as associate members.  We are often asked by ex-Mods to help them find a Lambretta or Vespa scooter so they can get back on the road again and join the club, which we are always pleased to do.
We meet regularly every Wednesday evening (venues change e.g. depending on the season), Our club website torbaymods.com receives many hits and ok, so our club members keep looking at it, but who can blame them as it has lots of info and literally thousands of pictures and videos taken at our club activities over the years!  We occasionally join other nearby clubs for large ride outs, usually at the beginning of the year.
Although our scooters are predominantly traditional 2 stroke, air cooled, and geared, (mainly Vespas and Lambrettas), recent developments have meant Vespa and other manufacturers have turned largely to 4 stroke, water cooled and automatic transmission. We accept that future developments of the retro scooter will probably stay with this power system and electric and so include these in our club.
The foundation:
Me, Mike and Stan bought Lambrettas again in about 2006, and it was Mike that suggested we do a charity run the following April (2007) down to Lands End to raise money for a school he worked at in Totnes. I can’t recall how much we raised as it wasn’t a lot but the weather was fantastic and we had a lot of fun. Whilst having a drink in the Waterside pub at Goodrington recalling our scooter expedition to Cornwall we decided to form the scooter club and I named it Torbay Mods so others could join in with us and share the same experiences. Unfortunately, Mike left the club after a year or so, which left me and Stan running things. And very sadly as mentioned above we lost our very special friend Stan to cancer in February 2011. The club continues stronger than ever though never forgetting the enthusiasm for life that Stan had and the very happy memories that we shared with him. Paul Savin
Mods and Rockers:
In August 2014 (bank holiday weekend) our club decided to take part in the Mod weekender in Brighton. It was a special year, as it celebrated the 50th anniversary of the “disturbances” between the Mods and Rockers that took place in Brighton back in 1964. We all know about the events that unfolded there and we have all seen Quadrophenia. Our club member Paul Grant was there 60 years ago, and had not been back since.
This is the late Paul Grant’s report:
Paul Grant on Brighton sea front 2014

It was a very special year for me, and, turned out to be quite emotional as well. Once or twice, I had to separate myself from everybody, and compose myself. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, the weekend was magical. I can only describe the atmosphere as incredible, the friendship and camaraderie superb. We were all Mods together, and it seemed like we had known each other all our lives. Endless hand shaking, constant “you look good mate”. Getting to the scooters there, nothing short of magnificent some wonderful machines, many museum quality, in terms of restoration and presentation. One stood out, a series two Lambretta in blue and lashings of chrome, wow, what a  cracker! I told the owner so. I should also mention the attractive girl from Germany, on her leopard skin Vespa, which she had done herself. I expect we all saw Marilyn Monroe, who looked great, and posed for many photos I should also mention the two Jimmy Lambrettas, both good replicas. We saw all the scenes, streets etc. used in the film Quadrophenia, not forgetting  ” the alley”, where we all posed for photos. We also gathered outside the clothes shop Jump the Gun where we met some great Mods, and saw some nice scooters. The weekend passed far too quickly, an experience I shall never forget!

About Paul Savin
I was a Mod in Oxford in the 60s and had owned 2 Lambrettas, an Li150 then shortly after trading it in for an SX200 (probably one of the most sought after Lambrettas

with a very high price tag these days!) It was a very dangerous time to be on 2 wheels back then as we were allowed to get straight onto a very fast bike without what I call proper training, and as a result came off many times but surprisingly with only a few scrapes and bruises! I wasn’t a Mod for long and it was all over too soon when family commitments became priority! Moving on approximately 32 years to 2003, and I decided to try one of the new modern scooters that I noticed were becoming very popular on the road. I enjoyed it greatly but could recall how much more fun it was riding those classic Lambretta scooters!.

Will and Ian at BMAD Paignton sea front

Every summer I would ride down to BMAD (Bikers Make A Difference) on Paignton sea front on my Gilera Runner VXR200 and until the summer of 2006 when I pulled up alongside a couple of Lambrettas parked in amongst the Harleys and got chatting to these guys (Will and Ian I think there names were). When they departed, I asked if I could follow them back through town before going home, which I did, and I think it was smelling that 2 stroke petrol and hearing those engines as they pulled away that inspired me to buy a Lambretta again. So you could say that these 2 guys were partly responsible for the birth of our very popular club!

Events
We are one of the largest and most active scooter clubs in the South West attending a variety of charity and associated events throughout the year, for example the Classic Car Show on Paignton Green and Powderham Classic Vehicle Gathering. We do venture further afield as well with long tours in the UK and many ‘rallies’ such as the Brighton Mod Weekender, Isle of Wight rally (both on August Bank holiday weekend) and Woolacombe rally in held at the end of September.
